                                                 Age of the Dragon War

Prologue

Once there were two Sandwing dragons named Cactus and Torch. They had a dragonet on a hot stormy night in the Sandwing Desert. They named her Steam. Her brother was named Scorpion because he protected Steam from a scorpion when it got too close.Cactus looked down at her dragonets and smiled sadly.Torch looked into the vile storm, watching for approaching dragons.

“Torch, where do we keep them? Burn will be looking for them”, Cactus said.

“We’ll find some dragon to take care of them,ok?”Torch said.He nudged her wing lovingly with his.

She smiled just a tinge, thinking that everything just might work out for them.

But as Cactus looked out into the dark deserted land and saw a bundle of golden flying toward them, she realized that she was wrong.

Chapter 1

The Preparation

“Come on Steam! You’re going to be late! Again!”a voice shouted in the distance.

“I’m coming!,”I shouted back. My brother was so annoying sometimes. I spread out my golden wings so they could bathe in the sunlight.

“I’ve been waiti-”He stopped when he saw me. “Now is not the time to sunbathe.”Scorpion said playfully.

I giggled.Yes,he can be annoying, but he is always so protective and loving to me. He is my big brother, anyways,so I would kind-of expect that.

    “I thought I could shine them up a bit,you know?Befor-”

“Before we go into a battle to find our guardians?,”he said sarcastically, giving me a skeptic look “I don’t think so, silly dragonet.”

    “Hey,” I grunted, “You’re a dragonet too.”

    “Yeah, but older.”

Scorpion dodged a wingful of water from my direction. He started laughing.I hissed, outraged that he didn’t seem to care about what was going to happen very soon.He stopped laughing, coming over to me with open wings, and pulled me into a hug.

“We’ll be okay, alright little sunshine?,”he said, twining his tail with mine.

OK?,I thought,we’re going into a battlefield to go see some guardian that will watch over us,and I’m barely a year old! But I faked a smile anyway and looked into my big brother’s light yet strong eyes.

    “Okay.

But it was not okay.

Chapter 2

                 The Loss

“Scorpion! Wait for me!,”I said, beating my little wings as I tried to keep up with him.

“My little sunshine,I would wait for you, but,”Scorpion cleared his throat, “but I wouldn’t want you to be a weak dragon when you’re older, understand?”.

I did not understand, but I nodded anyway. As we flew out of the cave,I heard wing beats.

“Umm, Scorpion?,”I said, “do you hear that sound?”

    “Yes I do,Steam.Yes I do.”

All of the sudden he pulled me over to the side, both of us dodging a dead dragon falling from the sky.Well,he wasn’t actually dead yet,but he was screaming that scream you hear when you’re about to die. I learned that from Scorpion during battle training. I shivered, and Scorpion must have felt me because he wrapped his wings around me, protectively.

    “Where are they?,” I asked.

    “He.Where is he.”

“There’s only one looking after us?”

He scratched his neck, about to reply when more screams and roars came from above.

“Come on, I’ll try to protect you the best I can, cause this battle is with older dragons. Stay close little sunshine.”

I closed my eyes, knowing I wouldn’t want to see this.Ready for the challenge, I nodded, but I wasn’t really sure if I really was ready. As we flew in the battle,Scorpion and I dodged dying dragons and one on one battles.

“Scorpion!,”Steam yelled over the screams of dragons around them, “there’s a dragon waving at us.Is he him?”

“Uhhh, maybe. Let’s check it out.”

But as he said this, a Skywing came out of nowhere and attacked Scorpion. I flew after him as the two dragons descended fast towards the ash and blood covered ground. They landed on their feet, though. I sighed a sigh of relief. But there was no relief in what came next.

    “SCORPION! BEHIND YOU!”

He gave me a questioning look, then turned around. The Skywing had gotten back up with the poisonous barb of a dead Sandwings tail in his claws.

He stabbed my brother in the heart.

Scorpion screamed and clawed at his chest, trying to scrape the poison out, but it was no use. Then the Skywing ripped his wings and pushed him off the edge of the mountain’s cliff, smiling. I attacked him with all my strength, and clawed his wings multiple times while I dodged his vicious swipes, then I pushed him off the cliff too. I sat down and curled my tail in, looking out off the cliff at the dieing dragons.

    “I’m sorry Scorpion. I’m so sorry…”

I cried into my claws. How could I have let this happen?! If I had warned him just a couple seconds before it happened,he could still be alive! But I felt more sad then mad right then. I’ll never forget what the Skywings did to me.They will regret the day that they messed with u-.....me.

I heard wingbeats,so I turned around to try and fight, but what I saw astonished me.There,in the sky looking down on me,was Queen Sunny. She gasped when she saw me,and turned to one of her guards.

“Mirage, guard us for sec, will you?”

He nodded, and she flew down to me and smiled.

    “Are you ok, little dragonet?”

I shook my head, “no”.

Sunny looked around, probably for my parents because why would a not even 1 year old dragon be out during a battle for land on her own without any parents?

Like she could read my mind, she said,“Then it’s decided. You will come home with me and I will treat you as my own. Mirage, Dusk, protect us as we fly through here.”

The Queen took hold of my talons and gave them a little squeeze. She put her own talons around me easily and I held on to her shoulders, my face pressing into her warm chest. As we flew,I cried quietly in her wing, and she wrapped me in a little bit tighter.I lost something that day,but I found something amazing that would change my whole life.
